Karlsson Called Up

Sorry for the lack of updates for the past two days, figuring out the finer details of this podcasting business has kept me relatively busy. Anyways, the good news is that the recording and editing process is done, I'm just waiting on the Bloguin web designers to provide me with the proper access to upload and create a feed for the audio file so that I can distribute it to you guys. I'm still hoping to have it uploaded today, but I'm really at the whim of my superiors.

I digress. For those who haven't heard, Erik Karlsson has been recalled by the Ottawa Senators and Brian Lee has been demoted. Here's the official press release from the Ottawa Senators:

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators today recalled defenceman Erik Karlsson from the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, and re-assigned defenceman Brian Lee to the AHL team.

Karlsson, assigned to Binghamton on Oct. 27, recorded 11 assists, 22 penalty minutes and was even in plus-minus over the team’s last 12 games. He recorded assists in seven of 12 games, had three multi-point games, including a team-high three assists in his team’s 7-0 win over the Adirondack Phantoms on Thursday, Nov. 26.

The 19-year-old native of Landsbro, Sweden, made his National Hockey League debut on Oct. 3 in the Senators’ 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers and earned his first NHL point (an assist) in that contest. Karlsson appeared in nine Senators regular-season games, recording three assists and six penalty minutes.

Lee, recalled on Oct. 27 after starting the season with B-Sens, has played in Ottawa’s last 13 games, recording two goals, an assist, six penalty minutes and a -1 rating.

In nine AHL games with Binghamton this season, the 22-year-old native of Moorhead, Minn., has one goal, three assists and 19 penalty minutes.

The return of Karlsson is interesting for a number of reasons with the most important being that if Karlsson plays one more game that will give him ten games at the NHL level on the year. In other words, his entry level deal will kick in and regardless of how many more games he plays, one year will come off of his contract. On the other hand, although I haven't really had an opportunity to watch the last two games in detail, I was never really under the impression that Brian Lee was playing that poorly.

I realize that the Senators currently reside in first place in the Northeast Division and are a legitimate threat to make the playoffs but is the upgrade from Brian Lee to Erik Karlsson enough to justify burning a year off of Karlsson's contract?

I think this is likely a brilliant case of future cap-management by Murray.

See, if we don't burn a year off Karlsson's rookie contract now, then we could very possibly have Special K, Weiroch (sp?) and Cowen ALL up for RFA at the same time. If they all pan out like we hope they will, then that could be a very tough position for BM to be in, assuming of course that he's still BM the GM at that point. We'd face a situation not unlike the one that Chicago is currently dealing with, in that three top players are all due a pay raise at the same time. Let's not forget that we still have quite a few guys signed through those years, and cap management for those years should already be playing on BM's mind... especially if he signs the Russian Android to an extension, which he should. In my own personal opinion, this is actually a good move by BM. In three years, we'll be saying what a genius he was in 2009 to make a move like that.

Not only that, but this could mean that there is someone interested in Lee. If BM knows that an offer is coming (from CHI, perhaps) then it would make sense to get Karlsson up with the big club to get back into the swing of things.

And let's face it - Lee hasn't been bad with Ottawa this year, but he hasn't exactly lit it up, either.

Anyway, GO SENS GO!

@Rob - interesting point, but I think Wiercioch being ready to go next year is a little bit optimistic, and dangerous. Too many rookie D if that's the case.

@ Rob & Darren:

I agree with Darren, next season might be a little ambitious for Wiercioch.

On a completely different note, I think I'm more stoked for Cowen's arrival than Karlsson's. Is anyone else feeling the same?

I'm with you Nichols....but unlike some who see "the next Zdeno Chara", I am not at all convinced that Cowen's offensive game will translate at all at the NHL level. I still think he's gonna be an absolute rock back there though. I see a slightly better offensively and bigger nastier Chris Phillips, which is just fine with me.

@Josh

I've read a number of things that have alluded to Cowen's offensive game as being understated. Whether it translates to the NHL level is another matter, but I'm completely comfortable with a 6'5" 19 year old who's willing to punish the opposition.

Joshua,

Chara was a rock back there for us as well and the only reason he is a good skater now is that the senators organization taught him to skate and handle the puck. We can build the Chara in Cowen just as well.

I think there may be a move coming up in the near future. Chicago is stirring in their seats waiting to extend their future ponies.

Inserting Karlsson and demoting Lee, for this season anyway, makes the team weaker. Karlsson didn't have what it takes the first nine games, if he did he'd have never left. Unless Murray is planning a trade and is showcasing him (unlikely), this move makes no sense to me.

Two possibilities:

1. Clouston/Murray really weren't happy with Lee (though he seemed ok to me too) and they think Karlsson would be a bigger help making the playoffs, so they are ok burning a year on the entry level contract.

2. They are looking to trade a D man soon. When Volchie is back, I can't see them sending Karlsson down so quickly after swapping him for Lee. My guess is that it would involve two roster players for one, and it will likely include one of Picard or Campolie going. They have both been playing well and with their low cost, may have reasonable trades value at the moment. If it is something like the rumoured Picard + Shannon for Barker, then I would guess Murray thinks we have a possible contender this year and/or next. It would be an aggressive move to be sure.

Trades
written by Andrew , November 27, 2009
I think Picard is the best candidate for a trade right now, though I'm not sure said trade would happen this early in the season, both because other GMs want to see how the market plays out until the deadline and because Murray wants to see if Karlsson can play a legit part in this team contending.

That being said, if we make a trade for a player who's going to be a legit difference-maker here, the deal is going to have to include picks, and thats a huge stumbling block for BM i think. I doubt theres a market for most of the players BM is willing to part with. It'd be great to get rid of guys like Kelly or Shannon but I think we're dreaming if we think we can turn 2 or 3 mediocre players into one good one.

Picard
written by Andrew , November 27, 2009
Oh right, your thing with Picard. Look Nik, I never said in my post that trading him was the best course of action or that it would improve the team at all. I simply stated that he was the best candidate for a trade, because there's no market for any of our other tradeable players.

Yes, I think he's expendable, but only if it improves the team, which seems unlikely. Surely even you couldnt disagree with this logic.

For failure to recognize Mr. Picard's contribution to our over coming two major injuries to #17 & #24...and presently being in 1st place...you are to report immediately to Bingo where that old Philly "Ironman" has been given instructions to take a round out of ya!...

I was dreaming...

Or so people said I was...

I knew Karlsson would be back this season. 11 assists in 12 games in Bingo... One goal in the NHL and the flood gates open, then we praise the Norse hockey gods for giving us their newest begotten son, Erik Karlsson.

And yes, I can't wait for the Tandem of Cowen and Karlsson next season!
