There's a lot of love going out to Jared Cowen around these parts lately and really, what's not to like about a 6'5", 225lb defenseman, who if healthy would have been selected as a top 5 pick?
Well, we've found a reason. In an interview with the Saskatoon StarPhoenix's Cory Wolfe (tip of the cap to James Gordon from Hockey Capital for the find), Jared Cowen was asked which concert he'd spend his first NHL paycheque on:
Oooh, good question. I don't really go to concerts that much, but in Spokane I went to a Kid Rock concert and that was pretty good. If I had to pick one, I heard Nickelback is really good live. That would be a good one to see.Jared, who told you Nickelback was really good live? The CRTC?
Poor musical tastes aside, I've gone into our archives and pulled out some quality information from our Live Trade Deadline Day Blog. When Russ Farwell, GM of the Seattle Thunderbirds, joined us, one reader brought up a couple of questions pertaining to Cowen. Here's part of that transcript:
1:46 [Comment From Josh]
Russ can you talk a little bit about Jared Cowen and the type of impact he has (or had prior to his injury) on a nightly basis?
1:47 Russ Farwell: Cowen is dominant player. He is tough and dominant but also joins the play and makes good decisions in the neutral zone. We felt he was Spoks (Spokane's) best player when he got hurt.
1:48 Russ Farwell: He should have been considered for the WJ team because he's a great player.
1:49 Russ Farwell: He's tough and hard to play against. I do not know anything negative about him. We interviewed him before the draft (WHL) and there were no flaws apparent to us.
1:49 [Comment From Josh]
Were you surprised that Cowen didn't even get an invite to the camp in December? Was it just because he was a 17 year old?
1:50 Russ Farwell: Very surprised. Simply a mistake in my opinion. They might not have taken him in the end due to age but to not get to the camp was a mistake.
Draft Review:
The National Post ran a piece featuring the analysis of Mark Seidel of the unaffiliated North American Central Scouting Service who rated all of the Canadian NHL club's drafts.
Here's what he had to say about Ottawa:
Ottawa Senators
Grade: A-
Draft Picks:
9th Jared Cowen, D, Spokane (WHL)
39th Jacob Silfverberg, F, Brynas Jr. (SWE)
46th Robin Lehner, G, Frolunda Jr. (SWE)
100th Chris Wideman, D, Miami (NCAA)
130th Mike Hoffman, F, Drummondville (QMJHL)
146th Jeff Costello, F, Cedar Rapids (USHL)
160th Corey Cowick, F, Ottawa (OHL)
190th Brad Peltz, F, Avon Old Farms (US High School)
191st Michael Sdao, D, Lincoln (USHL)
Breakdown: The Senators had their sights set on Leafs’ pick Kadri, but happily settled for the 6-foot-5 Cowen. The defenceman, who was considered a top-3 pick when the season began, has been compared to Braydon Coburn. Ottawa may also be pleasantly rewarded with the athletic 6-foot-3 Lehner, a goalie that NHL Central Scouting ranked as the third-best European in his position.
Seidel Says: “[Cowen] missed the second half of the season with a serious knee injury but he is expected to make a full recovery and could become the perfect match with last year’s first rounder Erik Karlsson, because of his physical play and strong skating.”
