According to a Garrioch article, Senators President, Roy Mlakar, has confirmed that Eugene Melnyk was promised an All-Star Game by the League after he bought the team saved it from financial ruin. While the League has been making promises to its owners, it seems like it's been ages since Melnyk's promise to bring the elusive Stanley Cup here to the capital.
The club has hosted two NHL drafts (2005, '08), played in the Stanley Cup final (2007) and the city hosted the world junior championship (2009) in the last four years.Yes, nothing gets the heart palpitating quite like a glorified exhibition game that no player really cares about. (Well, to be fair, the players do get the competitive juices flowing in a tied game with under three minutes left to play.)
People in the city would be excited to have the best players in town for the weekend. ~ Bruce Garrioch, The Ottawa Sun
"Everything that we've ever presented has been looked upon as tremendous and first-class," said Mlakar. Not everything Roy. Not everything. Not the Spartan speech during the Cup Finals, nor the Senators' product for the past year and a half. But whatever, after years of great hockey, we're now conditioned to watching professional athletes coast for long periods of time. Bring on the 2012 All-Star Game!
Gerber Goodiness:
Buried deep in this Garrioch article is a small nugget of information that the Calgary Flames would be interested in picking up Martin Gerber on re-entry waivers. It's not the first time that Garrioch has mentioned that a team may be interested if Gerber hits re-entry so it really makes you wonder when Bryan Murray's going to go through with it. You would figure that saving Melnyk $850K is more worthwhile than paying him $1.7-million to play out the remainder of the season in Binghamton.
