In getting Chris Campoli, the Senators get a guy with a lot of potential who can move the puck who is making a cap friendly $600,000 and is signed through next season. Although he hasn’t lit it up this season (6 G, 11 A, -20) it’s hard judge him on his individual stats since he was previously playing for the NHL’s worst team. Campoli has produced 4 more goals and only 3 less points than our old buddy Wade Redden and for less than a tenth of the price! Murray seems to covet Campoli, and he essentially said that the presumably late first rounder was for him. Some probably want to hop back on the Fire Murray Bandwagon for giving up the first round pick, but in the late first round you usually find guys of Campoli’s ilk but with less experience and you have to wait on their development, or a goalie which is always hit or miss. Also, Murray has found his replacement for Kuba, who seems all but destined to be dealt.
The Mcammond/ Comrie part of the deal was a transfer of expiring deals, but could work out in Ottawa’s favour. Dean ‘better not skate with my head down’ Mcammond was good in his fourth line role over the past few seasons with the Senators be was not going to be back next year. In getting Comrie back, it gives the Senators a few options as well as legitimate but short term secondary scoring help. The first option is to hold on to Comrie and play out the season and move on afterwards. The second is to resign Comrie who was popular in the dressing room and apparently wanted to come back to Ottawa for the right price in 2007. The third option is to deal Comrie come trade deadline to help stockpile some more picks and prospects for the future. Not to mention that bringing back Comrie means that Ottawa has possibly the hottest celebrity girlfriend duo in the NHL. There is also a connection between Cory Clouston and Mike Comrie. During Comrie’s brief stay in the WHL with the Kootenay Ice, Clouston was an assistant coach.
This deal definitely is for the future. By getting a coveted puck moving defenseman who can skate, make the cliché first pass, play the point on the powerplay and is signed through next year, Murray has addressed a principle team need. No it isn’t Jay Bouwmeester or Brian Campbell, but Campoli is a young guy with a lot of talent whom the Islanders were reluctant to give up with good reason. By securing some secondary scoring in the short term and possibly long term with Comrie, Murray has addressed another principle team need. Also, if Comrie is dealt at the deadline things don’t look so bad either:
Meszaros (underachieving, soft), Comrie (had for next to nothing, UFA at years end), Kuba (UFA at years end), first rounder (late since San Jose will most likely push for the Cup)
=
multiple picks/prospects, Campoli, Picard
Not bad when you look at it like that but with all that being said Campoli could shit the bed and Comrie could be a non factor or even worse fit in and succeed so much that he’s out of the Sens price range when he becomes a UFA this summer. Nothing seems strange in Ottawa anymore, we’ve seen and heard it all. Until we see how things shake out March 4th and the rest of the season the deal as a whole is hard to judge.
Just my thoughts, what do you think?
