Recently, I've corresponded with Damien Goddard of Let's Go DU - Denver Hockey Blog fame. With Patrick Wiercioch's invitation to Team Canada's WJHC camp, I thought it'd be a great opportunity for Sens fans to familiarize themselves with Wiercioch. Here's what Goddard had to say: Here's probably the best article about Patrick written 5 weeks ago. Good background for you.
Here's another piece from his hometown newspaper.
In my opinion, Patrick Wiercioch is probably the most complete Freshman defenseman to play at the University of Denver. Perhaps better that Matt Carle (Flyers) at the same point in his career.
Wiercioch quarterbacks the power play with ease and his strongest asset is his ability to create space by skating with the puck in the offensive zone and firing laser passes or shooting when an opening appears. He also has shown tremendous "puck sense" going to the net and already has one game winner and a near miss in the last 5 seconds of a game.
He is obviously an exceptional player for Team Canada scouts to invite him to their Selection Camp at the 11th hour. Without a doubt Canada made a wise choice.
At 6'5 and 185 lbs. he has a lanky build, but he never looks awkward or uncoordinated. He has been playing with an injured shoulder for the past few weeks and still has averaged a point a game despite the injury. If he doesn't make Team Canada, I suspect the shoulder might be a reason. He's too good to be sitting at home over Christmas.
There is no doubt that Wiercioch is one of the best defencemen in NCAA hockey right now, and will easily adjust to World Junior Championship hockey if he is selected. I know he is thrilled at the possibility of playing in front of Ottawa fans over New Years.
